World Environment Day: Are we doing enough? Thoughts on The Ocean Race, Ulysse Nardin and the latest Diver collaboration Part 1
On World Environment Day, I want to discuss the efforts of a group of people to protect our beautiful blue planet. I'm talking about the Ulysse Nardin Diver The Ocean Race, it's the first DIVER model to consist mainly of recycled fishing nets, the efforts made by The Ocean Race organization and the use of recycled materials.
Ulysse Nardin Diver The Ocean Race
Ulysse Nardin has a huge nautical chronograph heritage, from… like forever… into the nautical world. But for facts, the year was 1846. As a brand, they are involved as sponsors, partners and enthusiasts in various activities related to the ocean and its fauna: look at Ulysse Nardin announcing the brand's new friend: Andromache, a young female white shark! Ulysse Nardin has partnered with Ocearch, a leading scientific nonprofit in shark conservation, to focus on sharks.
As such, they are rightfully aware of the problems facing our oceans: plastic pollution among them. According to the brand: Fishing nets (mainly made of polyamide) are one of the main sources of this ocean plastic pollution: up to 640,000 tonnes of plastic are lost or discarded each year (plus 9 million tonnes of plastic discharged into the sea (Science) .
Ulysse Nardin decided to do something about it:
– In September 2020, Ulysse Nardin launched the R-STRAP wristband made entirely of recycled materials, marking the first milestone in its commitment to supporting the ocean’s circular economy Fishing nets, available for MARINE, DIVER and FREAK X replica watches for sale.
– Then in November 2020, the brand innovated with DIVER NET, an experimental concept watch whose every element has been thoughtfully designed to be durable and as environmentally friendly as possible, a fully innovative and upcycled watch. Two considerable positive advances for the brand and watchmaking.
Recycling, Upcycling and Luxury
Patrick Pruniaux is committed to bringing to the market luxury goods made from recycled materials and using the "greenest" methods possible. One of the issues facing humanity today is the ability to repair damage, recycle dumped or lost waste, and the technical capacity to manufacture with a low carbon footprint. But there has to be a first step...
The Ulysse Nardin Diver The Ocean Race is a stunning 44mm full-scale diver's best replica watches with 300m water resistance, a unidirectional "dive watch" bezel, a screw down crown and an easily adjustable strap. What makes it special is the list of recycled materials it uses:
• Side pods and rear covers 40% Carbonium® (a lightweight yet strong carbon composite material commonly used in aircraft fuselages and wings) and 60% recycled fishing nets, Nylo® – Supplier: Lavoisier Composite (France) and FIL&FAB (France) ),
• Stainless steel case at least 80% recycled from the automotive industry - Supplier: Voestalpine Boehler, Austria.
• Bezel decoration 100% Carbonium®. – Lavoisier Composite (France), using scrap from aircraft manufacturing. It has a 40% lower environmental impact than other carbon composite materials
But making a watch case from recycled materials is not an easy task. First, it was a difficult task to find reliable partners who could supply quality materials while respecting the highest norms of the circular economy, have low environmental impact and are stable and trustworthy businesses. Unfortunately, most companies using recycled materials are start-ups (too small and still in the early stages of operations.cheap watches for sale
The next issue is to use available materials. How to use them? No one has timely experience with what is the strongest yet good looking composite material or how these new materials will behave. A brand cannot create (or use) a new material that is supposed to be green, but after a few years becomes brittle, defective and unusable. would completely destroy the concept of sustainability. Therefore, Ulysse Nardin and its partners first needed to find the best compromise. The results are very attractive.
A strap with a scratch closure is an already familiar element from last year's Ulysse Nardin watch Diver Net. It is 100% recycled from fishing nets, this time with JTTI (France) as supplier (instead of Tide - Switzerland). It's comfortable and fits perfectly with the nautical theme.
The dial presents a distinctive 'X', gorgeously rendered in a diver's grey/green theme. Stamped dials present a neutral and cheerful combination of finishes. Applied hour markers with a large Super-Luminova center combine with large stick-shaped hands for good legibility. I really like how the textures play with the sunlight. See the video at the end of the article.cheap Patek Philippe
The dial presents a fine black and white print on its registers and decorative elements. A splash of green paint brings design elements closer and closer together.
Excellent legibility in any lighting conditions. The circular date window at 6 o'clock is black on a white background. Normally this would stand out as a negative contrast, but the complication is nicely integrated thanks to the clever use of white printing and white luminous indexes.
The Ulysse Nardin watch Diver The Ocean race is powered by the in-house movement UN 118. The movement is based on the brand's legendary silicon technology (making it impervious to magnetic fields and extremely stable against temperature changes) and is made of 100% recycled brass. Furthermore, 95% of the components are sourced within a 30km radius of the manufacturer.
The Caliber UN118 is an automatic beast with a 60-hour power reserve, featuring a silicon and DiamonSil technology (Silicon and Synthetic Diamond) escapement at 4Hz, which displays the hours, minutes, small seconds, date and power reserve.JACOB & CO ASTRONOMIA GAMBLER
As expected, it’s beautifully adorned with circular Côtes de Genève, beadwork, and diamond trim – as we’ve seen in previous Marine Chronometer watches. While not as lustful as seen in pricier models, the trim is quieter and more appropriate, with the rotor's basic trim elements trimmed in warm green paint.
The Ulysse Nardin Diver The Ocean Race watch comes in a waterproof R-PET bag that fits into dry bags recycled from the ocean by Helly Hansen, official apparel supplier to the Ocean Race. The retail packaging is markedly different from what was previously considered "luxury". Using all these materials and producing these items was more expensive and complicated than one might think. Hence the "Responsible Luxury" logo.
"Fixing" something that has been damaged through irresponsibility is very difficult. We are on the brink of catastrophic climate change, and something must be done about it. Ulysse Nardin has chosen the difficult task of being a trailblazer, establishing new connections and ways to work towards sustainable luxury. Finding the right materials, creating the right manufacturing processes, and delivering truly responsible products is more challenging than imagined.
Despite the arduous journey, the brand has been able to deliver great products. The watch looks and feels great. In addition to bringing joy to the owners, it also looks good in the way of the future. The partnership with The Ocean Race, the chain of business co-operations and the education it implies is a reward for the future.Audemars Piguet Royal Oak replica
